The beginning… In 2003 Latisha Simmons started MahoganyGirl as a Hip Hop outlet for women. MahoganyGirl was and still is the only website of its kind in the marketplace. The website featured celebrity interviews, news, lifestyle features and trends. Since then Latisha has remained active on social media gaining thousands of followers worldwide via her Twitter and Instagram accounts @MahoganyGirl03… Although the website is just a hobby now Latisha still creates content for the platform from time to time. In 2015 she launched the MahoganyGirl mobile apps which can be downloaded from the Google Play store and Amazon Underground. Enjoy.

Behind the scenes… After briefly attending The Academy of Art College San Francisco… Latisha started her writing career in Los Angeles back in 2001 when she responded to an ad in the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper seeking writers. She contributed a story and it was accepted. From there she contributed to several magazines and websites including; The Source, Essence, Hue and RIME.

As opportunities for interviews increased Latisha started MahoganyGirl as a outlet for her creative expression BUT that didn’t pay the bills… Behind the scenes between 2001 and 2005 Latisha worked 9 to 5 at Fox Cable, Sony Pictures Entertainment and TV Guide Channel… She also worked briefly in radio broadcasting in her home state of South Carolina in the cities of Myrtle Beach and Charleston.

Advocacy and Mental Health… After suffering some personal setbacks Latisha was motivated to start working in the mental health field… In 2013, While living in Fort Lauderdale, FL Latisha started training as a mental health specialist working with individuals with mental illness, substance abuse and duel diagnosis. She completed her training successfully and became a certified recovery specialist in the state of Florida via the Florida Certification Board… In 2014, she took a position in the state of Georgia working with individuals with mental health issues and forensic limitations… In this position she worked by helping clients on probation with little to no insurance to access helpful resources to ensure their successful path on the road to wellness and recovery.

Latisha assisted her clients with finding housing, accessing medical care, counselling, social security and job services. This position cleared a path for Latisha to become a certified recovery specialist in the state of Georgia in 2015 via the GMHCN Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network. Latisha is also certified in WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Planning), WHAM (Whole Health Action Management), Mental Health First Aid, Community Navigator of services via NAMI and she continues to obtain CEU (Continuing Education Credits) related to the field of mental health and substance abuse on a yearly basis.

A fan of the random road trip… Latisha spends her down time on social media posting throwback pics, selfies and memes @MahoganyGirl03… She’s a big fan of 90s hip hop culture and trends and enjoys listening or streaming music from the greats like Tupac and BIG. She is also a fan of Ice Cube, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, Aaliyah, Angela Winbush and a few of those one hit wonders from the 80s and 90s. Latisha is also a closet foodie and enjoys blowing money on food, sneakers and affordable fashions. #FACTS
